We are currently seeking a Business Development Manager for Battelle’s Health Business . This position located in the Washington DC Area but strong candidates located in a major U.S. city will be considered.


The Business Development Manager will support and drive growth of Battelle’s rapidly expanding Health business.

The position’s chief responsibility is to support the delivery of the financial goals of the Health business; primarily focused on opportunity identification, pipeline growth, and capture of new opportunities. The incumbent will be responsible for up to five Key Customers (e.g., NIH, NIAID, BARDA, CMS, VA, FDA, etc.) and is expected to have a thorough knowledge of each client’s organizational structure and relationships; including: product and sourcing strategies, funding and procurement processes. Additionally, the incumbent will manage and grow additional clients.

Incumbents contribute to annual overall sales and marketing plan and related budgets. Incumbents are responsible for leveraging and integrating multiple technical offerings to meet the clients’ needs.

Incumbents duties may include: market research; formulating offering strategies, marketing campaigns, and contact plans; opportunity identification, Gate Reviews, and Capture Planning. Frequent and routine client engagement and relationship management is expected. The incumbent will have direct accountability for the achievement of growth, penetration and sales objectives.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the development of marketing strategies to optimize sales, growth, market penetration and profitability.

  • Maintains effective client relationships from middle managers through C-level executives. Gathers information relative to priority research and development needs. Obtains information that relates to the identification of opportunities, qualification of leads, and client technical, financial, and schedule objectives.

  • Shaping, identifying, capturing, and managing strategic opportunities that support Battelle’s Life Science Research business.

  • Providing market and competitor intelligence on markets where Battelle is engaged, as well as insights on competition specific to individual opportunities.

  • Collaborates with functional areas and other business group management and technical staff to develop and provide market definitions responsive to client needs and market opportunities. Communicates viable leads to appropriate management for further evaluation.

  • Assisting the Business Unit and subordinate Business Line managers in the efficient and effective use of marketing resources across multiple client organizations to achieve growth and maintain margins.

  • Building and maintaining a robust funnel of leads and opportunities capable of meeting or exceeding established Business Unit sales goals.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical or Science-related technical field and 10+ years of experience in the Health market.

  • 10 years of experience in developing, capturing and winning large government opportunities.

  • Existing network of contacts in government agencies such as NIH, NIAID, BARDA, CMS, VA, FDA, etc.

  • Knowledge of competitors in this market space and experience in competitive assessment.

  • Demonstrated ability to present technical presentations to internal and external clientele and the ability to participate on proposal teams.


  • Technical and programmatic familiarity with toxicology and in vitro and in vivo safety and efficacy testing both for commercial and government clients.

  • Understanding of Center for Medicare/Medicaid mission, objectives, and operations.

  • Master’s Degree or higher, preferably in technical discipline

  • Experience in developing large government proposals preferred.

  • Experience with Microsoft Client Relationship Management (CRM) tool
