Battelle’s work is grounded in the belief that science, technology and a passion for excellence can make industries more competitive and the world a better place.
Battelle’s Integrated Science Solutions (ISS) is a part of the Contract Research business within Battelle providing laboratory support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
We are currently seeking a Sr Researcher - Epidemiology . This position will be located on the Roybal Campus in Atlanta, Georgia .
ISS is working with HHS/CDC which is responsible for pandemic influenza preparedness The CDC ID provides critical standards for pandemic preparedness to the U.S. State Public Health Laboratories and acts as a World Health Organization (WHO) reference laboratory supporting international influenza surveillance and response networks. Rapid genetic and antigenic characterization of circulating viral strains and emerging viruses with pandemic potential, coupled with vaccine development are essential components to increase pandemic readiness and response. CDC requires support in research and development efforts to eliminate data gaps in influenza surveillance by increasing the diagnostic and immunization tools available to clinical providers, public health laboratories and domestic and international partners. Monitoring influenza viruses through the application of molecular technologies and incorporation of laboratory surveillance with classic epidemiology facilitate detection of new epidemic variants and provide complete and accurate information about influenza viruses posing a pandemic threat. The use of viral molecular technologies and surveillance studies will provide candidate viruses for pre-pandemic and pandemic vaccine development to assist decision makers in formulating management strategies needed during influenza outbreaks, epidemics or pandemic.
Battelle is assisting the Influenza Division in seeking a Sr. Researcher - Epidemiology to utilize computational modeling, statistical, and epidemiological approaches to support surveillance and research activities to estimate the disease burden of influenza and evaluate the impact of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions on issues such as virus transmission, pathogenesis, population immunity, and clinical severity. The proposed tasks will cross multiple geographic and temporal scales, and multiple levels of complexity. Information obtained from the data will then be used in strategic decision making, program planning for control and prevention, program effectiveness evaluation and training. The selected candidate will work in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area at CDC’s, Roybal Campus. Salary will be determined based on education and experience. A full benefit package will be provided. Relocation support will not be provided. The selected candidate will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance.
Manage epidemiological surveillance data supporting influenza surveillance systems.
Utilize collected influenza surveillance data and process it using modern statistics including machine learning techniques, geographical information systems, and mathematical modeling to help improve estimates of influenza disease burden.
Leverage available statistical and analytic tools (i.e. SAS, R, etc.) to streamline and automate processes related to disease burden and modeling.
Explore the utility of data visualization platforms (i.e., R Shiny, Tableau, Power BI, etc.) to make core data more publicly accessible.
Utilization of R and SAS as part of knowledge base with scientific software programs.
Establish and maintain ties with a broad range of epidemiological and laboratory researchers inside and outside of CDC.
Communicate progress orally and in writing with technical monitor and other researchers.
Assist the technical monitor with preparation of reports, presentations, and papers for publication in scientific journals.
Communicate orally and in writing results with internal and external partners.

Minimum of 5+ years’ experience using R for mathematical and statistical modeling
Epidemiological data with influenza or other disease state.
Familiarity with data visualization platforms (i.e., R Shiny, Tableau, Power BI, etc.) preferred
Formal knowledge of biostatistics methods used in epidemiology (e.g. calculation of effectiveness of interventions using survival analysis), and/or use of Bayesian and likelihood-based statistics methods.
Ability to work independently and as part of a research team.
Ability to travel to collaborating institutions to participate in research programs
Experience working with large multidisciplinary teams.
U.S.Citizen or permanent resident.
