Primary Function

Battelle’s Aviation Security Division is seeking a physicist to lead research and development projects on X-ray based security technologies. Project work will involve material characterization, algorithm and software development, image processing, machine learning, statistical analysis, and associated research, development, test and evaluation of screening systems.

Major Responsibilities

This specific project is supporting the implementation of image quality-based standards to evaluate X-ray-based screening technology performance for acceptance testing, operational health, and performance degradation over time.

  • Candidates will be responsible for maintaining software algorithms, developing new algorithms, applying machine learning methods for performance health monitoring, and developing statistical methods to support test and evaluation events.

  • The individual should have strong programming experience, algorithm development expertise, and be versed in the use of machine learning methods to support advanced data analytics.

  • The qualified candidate will be the primary interface to the client and lead a team of scientific staff in the capture of data, development of analytical techniques, software and algorithm development, and SOP development and validation.

Position Requirements

THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS MUST BE MET TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Ph.D. in physics, or related field from an accredited college or university with 5-10 years of post-doctorate experience

  • Applied experience in signal processing of X-ray CT image data through the generation of MATLAB software (or similar software language, i.e. Python)

  • Must have strong background in X-ray imaging physics, with experience in characterizing materials, feature extraction, and segmentation techniques.

  • Experience with multivariate statistical and simulation techniques (e.g. multiple regression, principal components analysis, cluster analytics, discriminate function analysis, and Monte Carlo simulations)

  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Must have ability to work well in a diverse team environment and lead project activities with minimal supervision

  • Must be able to thrive in a dynamic environment with constant shifting of priorities and work load to address shifting project work

  • Must have experience leading team of 3-5 scientists and/or engineers for major program/project

  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and must be able to obtain a DoD Secret Level security clearance.

  • Candidate must also be able to obtain both TSA and DHS Suitability

  • Candidate must be willing and able to travel. (25%)

THE FOLLOWING IS DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION:

  • Already possess DoD Secret Clearance

  • Experience with explosives detection security technologies
