We are currently seeking an System Assessment Engineer .

Primary Function

Battelle’s Critical Infrastructure group is seeking an System Assessment Engineer to support the research, development, test and evaluation of security systems and technology for both the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This is a full time position and the selected candidate may work remotely.

Major Responsibilities

  • Primary responsibilities include providing system assessment field support related to the test and evaluation of integrated Explosive Detection System (EDS) x-ray devices and associated Baggage Handling Systems (BHS) interfaces.

  • Responsible for supporting system assessments including observation of system/component performance at airports prior to, during and following Integrated Site Acceptance (ISAT) test execution in a variety of capacities including data collection, reconciliation, and analysis.

  • Candidate will also be responsible for receiving and maintaining badges for access to restricted areas at multiple airports.

  • Technical areas applicable to this role include non-intrusive inspection and associated scientific disciplines, physical security applications, command & control integration, human factors, operations research, statistics, electrical/mechanical engineering, and systems engineering.

  • Familiarity with the ISAT program and EDS/BHS systems and integration is strongly desired.

  • Work will be performed remotely, with nearly 50-80% travel.

  • Candidates should have strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Candidates should also have strong computer skills including the use of applicable Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Position Requirements


  • The candidate must have at least a BS in engineering, operations research, mathematics, or physical science from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 8 years of experience working with BHS systems in an airport environment. BHS experience with no degree requires a minimum of 12 years’ experience.

  • Sole US Citizenship with the eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret Security Clearance and to obtain TSA Security Suitability.


  • Experience with Checked Baggage Technologies, specifically Explosive Detection Systems (EDS), as well as Baggage Handling Systems (BHS).

  • Experience with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) code.

  • Already possess a Secret Security Clearance.

  • Already possess TSA Security Suitability.
