Battelle Cyber Engineers solve the toughest Computer Science problems in the world. We work in small agile teams to push the bounds of computing technology. Our high-powered computer labs include specialized software and hardware, so our engineers have everything they need to invent new Cyber solutions.

Performs structured work assignments of routine complexity relating to the research, requirements, planning design, development, testing and packaging of cyber tools.

Major Responsibilities

  • Completes structured assignments of clearly defined tasking under direct supervision. Seeks direction to prioritize assignments and identify subsequent tasking.

  • Recognizes and communicates problems that have occurred to the PM and senior staff.

  • Demonstrates awareness of activities to prepare for technical risk management; and contributes to risk identification and mitigation.

  • Assists in the interpretation of results and drafts small sections of technical reports and documentation with guidance and oversight.

  • Demonstrates understanding of requirements for assigned tasks.

  • Completes straightforward implementations according to clearly defined requirements with review and guidance.

  • Developing technical skill in either forward or reverse engineering.

  • Demonstrates developing proficiency in life cycle processes for engineered systems through the performance of basic tasks under direct supervision

  • Works with senior staff to identify strengths and weaknesses of solutions, conclusions and problem approaches.

  • Works with internal stakeholders to support preparation of presentations and reports and may be called on to respond to questions regarding assigned tasks.

  • Demonstrates basic understanding of the development environment and quality practices as they relate to the individual projects assigned. Works with senior staff to develop unit tests and verify functionality and design.

  • Communicates effectively with teammates and task lead regarding status of assigned work, and issues that arise.

  • Contributes to IR&D studies.

  • Provides basic support to business development efforts led by others.

  • Provides supporting research for proposal content or technology and drafts paragraphs with direction and oversight from senior staff.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years’ experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field of study; Master’s degree with 0-6 years’ experience; or PhD with 0-2 years’ experience, or equivalent experience

  • Develop software to run in user-mode or kernel-mode

  • Ability to code in C or C++ Ability to use a scripting language (Python, Perl, Ruby, etc.)

  • Experience with PC and embedded systems architecture to include boot processes and OS internals

  • Experience with a disassembler for reverse engineering (IDA Pro, BinaryNinja, etc.)

  • Understand network protocols

  • Experience with one or more assembly languages (x86, x64, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, etc.)

  • Experience with one or more debuggers (WinDbg, OllyDbg, gdb, etc.)

  • Experience with reverse engineering one or more operating systems: Android, iOS, Windows, Linux, MacOS, VxWorks, QNX, RTOSs, or other custom operating systems

  • Ability to demonstrate good organization, communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills

  • Knowledge of common mitigation techniques (DEP, ASLR, etc.)

  • Must be a sole US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance


  • Participation in CTFs

  • Ability to analyze assembly-level code on multiple platforms (x86, x64, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, etc.)

  • Ability to analyze network protocols throughout all layers of the network stack

  • Experience with vulnerability research

  • Background in software engineering and architecture

  • Active Top Secret clearance
