Job Summary

Battelle is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Protein Biochemist for the National Security Business Unit. This full-time position is located in Columbus, Ohio . Some domestic and international travel is anticipated.

As a Protein Biochemist, you will assume a pivotal role in conducting cutting-edge research by leveraging your expertise in molecular biology, protein purification, characterization, and functional analysis. The successful candidate will showcase technical leadership and provide invaluable support in laboratory studies, including the production and characterization of proteins and enzymes. Additionally, you will actively identify and capitalize on opportunities to lead projects that enhance capabilities and foster the development of novel technical approaches. This position offers an exhilarating opportunity to collaborate with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team committed to advancing scientific knowledge and generating significant contributions to the field of protein biochemistry.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct DNA isolation, purification, and quantification, as well as PCR amplification and cloning.

  • Design and execute experiments to purify, characterize, and analyze proteins using various biochemical and biophysical techniques.

  • Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverable with some oversight

  • Conduct protein expression, purification, and characterization using a range of methodologies including chromatography, electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry.

  • Perform functional analysis to characterize the biological and biochemical properties of target proteins.

  • Develop and optimize protein purification protocols and methodologies for improved yield and quality.

  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, and contribute to the preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.

Some domestic and potential international travel is anticipated.

Key Qualifications

  • MS and 2 years of experience or BS and 4 years of experience in biochemistry or a related field.

  • Expertise in protein purification techniques such as affinity chromatography, size exclusion chromatography, and ion exchange chromatography using chromatography systems such as AKTA or NGC.

  • Proficiency in protein characterization techniques including SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and/ or mass spectrometry.

  • Expertise in protein expression systems (e.g., E. coli, yeast, mammalian cells) and recombinant protein production.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

  • Ability to travel.

  • Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory and in the field to perform assigned duties.

  • U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).

  • Experience with using plasmid editing software.
