The Environment and Agriculture Business Line within the Environment and Infrastructure Business Unit is currently seeking a Chief Software Architect . This position will be located in our Crystal City Office in Arlington, VA.

Primary Function

The Senior Research Leader is a high-level technical position for individuals who are recognized within and outside of the organization as outstanding authorities in a technical/scientific field. Demonstrates the ability to use the technical expertise to create a competitive advantage for Battelle. Exhibits a superior degree of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness in the application of advanced technologies, principles, theories and concepts.Identifies and applies technologies to advance outcomes in current and adjacent fields. Acts independently to uncover and resolve problems associated with the development and execution of programs. Plans R&D programs and advocates technology application programs to achieve strategic objectives. Emphasis is placed on high quality technical and business/planning activities.

As the Chief Software Architect, the candidate will be responsible for providing senior leadership for software development and systems engineering across the Battelle Contract Research Organization. Responsibilities include Support the development and execution of business strategies for each business unit within CRO as they relate to software and systems engineering. The Chief Software Architect will lead architecture analysis to inform investment decisions and ensure that solutions are being designed in accordance with strategy, capability roadmaps and future visions.

Major Responsibilities

  • Analyze and articulate the trade-offs of quality and minimal production support cost vs. development cost and make judicious decisions based on sound prior experience

  • Drive and facilitate discussions with clients to develop solutions and to identify business capabilities needed in relation to current and future objectives

  • Leadership of the analysis, design and development of a cohesive software roadmap for business areas and key projects.

  • Lead proof of concept efforts as appropriate to prove correctness and effectiveness of the created architecture

  • Lead architectural reviews for new Battelle project work

  • Communicate and present clearly and effectively to a diverse range of audiences, including Senior/Executive Management, general employee population, government clients, and scientists and academia

Position Requirements

Required Experience

  • Minimum BS in computer science, computer engineering, applied math, or a related field

  • With BS: 20+ years related experience

  • With MS/PhD: 15+ years related experience

  • 10+ years of software architecture and systems engineering leadership experience

  • Experience working with legacy systems and legacy designs, and adapting them to modern architectural environments

  • Deep technical knowledge of all aspects of software development and systems engineering including the software development life cycle

  • Strong understanding of Agile driven software development

  • Demonstrable experience translating Agile practices to traditional project / program management deliverables

  • Experience advocating and driving adoption of industry best practices to ensure standardization of business and software architecture across the enterprise

  • Large enterprise experience

  • Self-starter with high motivation and passion who thrives in an ever-changing, fast-paced business environment with the ability to adapt to change

  • Ability to secure a TS clearance

Desirable Qualifications

  • Active SECRET or TS clearance

  • MS/PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or equivalent

  • Strong understanding of government contracting process

  • Experience with DevOps and continuous delivery
