Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Transportation Human Factors Researcher to join Battelle’s Transportation Human Factors Practice. This position is located in Crystal City, VA but will consider remote locations. This selected candidate will provide support to leadership in Transportation Human Factors research, development, and testing (RDT&E); and design and develop tools, experiments, systems and environments to solve complex human factors problems in the surface transportation domain (primarily automotive; rail secondary). Specific domain and industry areas include but are not limited to transportation and highway safety, driver behavior/attention and safety, human machine interface (HMI), cognitive understanding, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), autonomous driving, connected vehicles, and emerging technologies in transportation.

Responsibilities

Strategy

  • Actively engaged in technical research to maintain and develop Battelle’s transportation business line offerings and reputation.

  • Identify and structure opportunities where unmet client needs can be satisfied by internal R&D investments, thereby allowing Battelle to bring new capabilities or offerings to clients. advantage.

Team Management/Leadership

  • Provide directions to and coordinate the efforts of human factors analysts, social scientists, engineers, and support staff.

Business Development and CRM

  • Build relationships with internal and external clients for business development and project execution. Develop and maintain an extensive network of relationships with current and potential customers in the transportation industry, including government clients, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), suppliers, universities, and technology firms.

  • Lead and participates directly in business development and proposal efforts including small (<1M), medium (1M+), and large efforts (10M+).

  • Maintain a strong pulse on client satisfaction and administer customer satisfaction surveys periodically.

  • Identify and attend high-value promotional events, conventions, conferences, and industry technical committees (e.g., TRB, SAE) with a focus on growing the Battelle CAV RDT&E brand.

Program and Project Delivery/Management

  • Lead complex human factors research and studies related to the design, development, and evaluation of tools, systems and environments for increased safety, efficiency, and operating performance. Lead and/or conduct research and development activities for experiments and projects.

  • Interpret complex data and results using advanced statistical and modeling tools/concepts, draft technical reports, develop, and deliver presentations (both formal and informal).

  • Provide Technical Leadership on projects in the areas of human factors, driver behavior, driver performance, vehicle automation/connectivity, and intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

  • Manage projects, execute technical tasks, take responsibility for overall project schedule, budget, quality, and client satisfaction, serving as the primary interface to the client.

  • Triage and troubleshoot projects and processes when expected results are not obtained.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Factors, Psychology, or a related discipline with 8 years of relevant experience or Master’s degree in related field with 5 years of related experience or PhD with 2 years of relevant experience.

  • Experience in conducting and managing experiments and tests with human subjects and recent experience (within the last 5 years) as a principal investigator in the conduct of driver performance/behavior measurement studies using on-the-road vehicles, driving simulators, and other field or laboratory equipment.

  • Strong understanding and experience in the areas of transportation and highway safety, driver safety and human factors, HMI, connected and automated vehicles (CAV), driver behavior/distraction concepts, application and analysis of transportation and traffic data (e.g., SHRP-2 data), design and conduct of field tests, road data collection and experiments for transportation human factors studies including naturalistic driving studies.

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex projects related to human factors, social science, human behavior/psychology, and engineering projects in the surface transportation domain.

  • Experience managing small teams of human factors engineers and scientists, assigning, and managing workload across team members, and providing mentoring, coaching, and feedback.

  • Strong project management skills including task and workload allocation and management, stakeholder engagement, schedule and budget management, client and subcontractor management, and risk management.

  • Advanced statistical analysis capabilities with the ability to apply complex statistical concepts to solve real world problems.

  • Must be a self-starter, be able to take on multiple complex assignments, independently manage and prioritize work time to balance customer and business needs, and ability to work with both government and commercial clients.

  • Demonstrated understanding of surface transportation policy, planning, operations, and/or management activities, as they relate to Human Factors.

  • Experience working with NHTSA, FHWA, FMCSA, TRB, State DOTs, and/or other similar clients and working/partnering with automotive OEMs, suppliers, and technology providers.

  • Experience doing business development, including capture planning and proposal writing, and demonstrated experience leading winning proposal efforts.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a wide range audience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Human Factors, Psychology or a related discipline with 8 years of relevant experience or PhD in Human Factors, Psychology or a related discipline with 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Advanced statistical skills and use of R, Python, or similar statistical and scientific languages

  • Understanding of human-in-the-loop and model-in-the-loop simulation analysis; Data visualization; Behavioral research data collection techniques.

  • Publication or Presentation experience in professional journals or conferences relating to research conducted in the transportation community.
