Battelle Memorial Institute Necropsy Technician III in West Jefferson, Ohio

We are currently seeking an Necropsy Technician III , located in West Jefferson, OH. This position will serve at our Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH locations.

Job Summary

Battelle’s Life Science Research is seeking a full-time technician to work in Pathology to perform necropsy procedures, trim tissues for histopathology process and generate data for various types of studies. This position is Monday through Friday and will require occasional overtime on nights and weekends and will require on call coverage; schedule may include holidays.

  • Perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals; to include gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling.

  • Trim tissues for histopathology examination.

  • Record data and perform quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

  • Knowledgeable of anatomic terms and pathology procedures

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding when technical procedure or theory deviates from accepted practices and creatively troubleshoot and correctly interpret results.

  • Lead development, validation and/or qualifications as required.

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently in a team environment.

  • Demonstrate leadership skills, strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Contribute to and follow study protocols, methods, test plans and SOPs.

  • Contribute to write and/or revise methods, and SOPs.

  • Contribute to cost estimates and planning of project resources.

  • Train and mentor staff members

  • Support in vivo pathogenicity/efficacy/toxicology studies.

  • Contributes to the technical planning of project work including recommending and implementing improved methods for new approaches. May provide input and justification for capital equipment purchases. Responsible for various types of equipment and oversight of facilities.

  • Uses ability as a skilled specialist in accordance with applicable policies and procedures to complete complex tasks in creative and effective ways

  • Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software. Ensure that all equipment used for studies is routinely maintained and/or calibrated.

  • Work with highly hazardous biological materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory.

  • Completes complex tasks under minimal supervision or guidance. Plans and performs project work from a basic understanding of objectives and work statements. Tracks progress against identified milestones and reports to supervisor any deviations from the plan.

Key Qualifications

  • Associate degree in related field plus 7 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

  • Two years of pathology laboratory experience.

  • Experience with histopathology processes to understand impact on necropsy techniques.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance (U.S. citizenship required.)

  • Sufficiently medically fit to do work in a laboratory wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties.

  • Demonstrated ability to be detailed-oriented, organized, dedicated, multitask with ease, and work well in a team setting within a diverse group of individuals.

  • Maintain a good work attendance record and be punctual for all project work.

  • Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements. Respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.

  • Must be willing to work in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and 3 (BSL3) (biocontainment) environment and able to wear appropriate respiratory protection.

  • Must be willing to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.

  • Must be willing to participate in random drug screening.

  • Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP).

  • Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.

  • Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material.

  • Newly hired employees are subject to a 90-day Introductory Period, during which their performance is evaluated through supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Experience in a contract research organization or similar research setting.

  • Experience with specialized techniques of whole-body perfusions, neuro-dissections, etc.

  • Experience working in a BSL-3.

  • Experience with ferrets, NHPs, and swine preferred.
